The Beauty of the In-Between: Life Lessons from Travel’s Quiet Moments

There’s a strange and quiet beauty in the spaces in-between.

Lately, I’ve found myself sitting in life’s own layover — not quite where I started, not yet where I want to land. It’s a familiar feeling to anyone building something new: waiting for collaborations to bloom, watching seeds planted in faith slowly stretch toward the light, and wondering when that next “boarding call” moment will arrive.

But travel — my oldest teacher — reminds me that the in-between isn’t just wasted time. It’s part of the journey itself.

I think about airports.

Airports are liminal places: neither here nor there. You’ve left home, but you haven’t yet arrived. You sit with your bags, watching people rush past. Maybe your phone runs out of battery. Maybe the WiFi is patchy. You are left with yourself. With your thoughts.

There’s discomfort in waiting.

But there’s also an unexpected richness.

Some of my clearest travel memories didn’t come from the glossy ‘arrivals’ or the Instagram-perfect destinations. They came from the waiting. The slowness. The surrender.

Like the time I was delayed for hours in a quiet corner of Agadir airport for 5hrs with No real plan. No distraction. And after the initial frustration faded, I did something I never allow myself to do at home — I simply sat and watched. Watched strangers share quiet laughter. Watched the changing light on the floor tiles. Watched life pass me by, as if I was standing on the edge of it.

And something shifted.

I realised that the layover was the destination.

At least, for that moment.

This week, life feels like that airport again. My business projects are in motion, my collaborations brewing, my travel plans unfolding slowly. But nothing is quite ready to take off. And instead of forcing the pace, I’m learning — again — to sit. To watch. To gather quiet strength in this waiting season.

It’s what travel has always taught me: patience. Trust.

The slow unfolding of things.

Maybe you’re there too, friend.

Maybe you’re waiting for something: a new job, a new adventure, a new clarity. Maybe you feel stuck in life’s departure lounge, wondering if your gate will ever open.

If so, let me remind you — as travel reminds me — that the in-between is not wasted. It’s the stretch of road that makes the arrival sweeter. The quiet breath before the next great chapter.

And sometimes, it’s where the magic happens.

A stray conversation with a stranger.

A moment of self-realisation scribbled in a notebook.

A glimpse of beauty you would have missed if life had rushed you along.

So here’s my gentle invitation — for you, and for myself:

Embrace the waiting season.

Travel has shown me that there’s grace here too.

Let your layover be part of the story.

Mini Takeaway: How to Find Peace in the In-Between (Travel and Life)

  1. Keep a Waiting Journal: Use travel delays (or life pauses) to jot down thoughts you’d normally ignore. Insight arrives in quiet moments.
  2. Practice ‘Still-Watching’: When stuck in transit, simply watch. Notice details — colours, sounds, textures. It grounds you in the now.
  3. Rethink ‘Wasted Time’: Remind yourself that progress often happens invisibly, like the quiet ticking of an unseen clock. Life unfolds even when you’re standing still.
  4. Trust the Journey: Like every flight that finally boards, your next moment will come. And when it does, you’ll carry these quiet lessons with you.

Final Thoughts

As I sit here — between projects, between places, between old comfort and new possibility — I smile gently.

Because travel, life, and growth all share this truth:

The in-between is not empty.

It is full.

Full of lessons.

Full of wonder.

Full of you becoming.

So wait well, friend.

The next gate will open soon.

Thanks for reading, Minnie xx
