Between Protecting My Peace and Celebrating My Growth: The Reality of Being a Creative Black Woman in Public
This post has been sitting in my drafts for a while — the kind of post I need to write just as much as I know someone else might need to read. Because the truth is, being a creative, entrepreneurial Black woman in public is… a lot. And I don’t mean just the workload. I mean spiritually. Emotionally. Energetically.
There’s a fine line I walk every day between celebrating my growth and protecting my peace. And some days, it’s not as easy as “just post it.”
When Strangers Cheer Louder Than People You Know
One of the hardest truths I’ve had to accept on this journey is that those closest to you won’t always be your biggest fans. Some may support quietly. Others not at all. Over time, I’ve found more encouragement from strangers online than from people who’ve known me for years — and that’s not said in bitterness, just honesty.
So when I share a win — like earning over £100 on Amazon from a buyer in Japan for journals I created years ago — it’s not to brag. It’s to remind myself (and you) that the seeds we plant today can still pay us years from now.
No, it’s not life-changing money. But it is mindset-shifting. Because it’s proof that I built something. That passive income works. That I’m not crazy for dreaming big.
But Still… I Hesitate
Even with wins, I pause.
“Is this too much?”
“Will people think I’m gloating?”
“What if people are watching not to celebrate, but to criticise?”
There’s something unsettling about knowing you’re being seen, but not celebrated. That evil eye feeling is real. That monitoring energy. That silent judgment that whispers, “who does she think she is?”
I feel it. But I refuse to let it shrink me.
How Do You Shine While Staying Spiritually Protected?
That’s the question. Because I want to share what I know. I want to inspire others to create. To earn. To grow. But I also want to feel safe, emotionally and energetically. I want to shine, but not be exposed. I want to teach, but not be drained.
What I’m learning is this: you can shine softly, but powerfully.
You can protect your glow without dimming your light.
You can discern, without disappearing.
Because dimming yourself might make others comfortable — but it’s never made me comfortable. And I didn’t come this far — building Minnie Escapes, publishing books, dreaming big — just to fit back into a box for people who were never clapping anyway.
Being a Personal Brand Is Beautiful — and Heavy
There’s so much joy in building a brand rooted in your own creativity, values, and voice. But let’s be honest — it comes with a lot:
- Self-doubt and overthinking
- Criticism or silence from people you hoped would cheer you on
- Fear of being “too visible”
- Navigating how to be authentic without feeling emotionally naked online
Still, I’ve realised this: being creative in public is not “too much” — it’s expansion.
And I’m allowed to take up space. So are you.
Whether it’s vlogging, writing, creating content, talking travel, or sharing lifestyle moments — I’m here to lead by example. Not because I think I have it all figured out, but because I believe in showing up real.
